Know! Peers Are Not The Only Pressure Point

How well do you know the parents of your child’s friends? Do you know what their expectations are regarding substances? If this question sounds a bit much, think again.

Startling new research shows a considerable number of parents are drinking and getting “high” with their kids and their kid’s friends. Is your child ready to say “no” to an adult who offers substances?

Whether getting pressure from a peer or an adult, sometimes a simple “no thanks” may not feel like enough. Arm your child with this easy formula and together brainstorm on how best to fill in the blanks:

I know you ____ + But I ____ + So I’m choosing to ____ = Success!

Possible fill-ins:

I know you think smoking pot is ok. But I have an agreement with my parents. So I’m choosing to join the others outside. = Substance-Free Kid!

I know you are just trying to have fun. But I am already having a good time. So I’m choosing to just grab another soft drink instead. = Substance-Free Kid!

It is critically important to get to know the parents of your children’s friends and to reinforce how to say “no” to peers, older teens, and yes, even adults.
